Our 9th and final  invited speaker in the 2016 PSM Guest Lecture Series is Daniel Boyd.

Daniel Boyd has been selected as part of the 20th Biennale of Sydney :The future is already here- its just not evenly distributed curated by Stephanie Rosenthal. Boyd’s work was also recently displayed in All the World’s Futures curated by Okwui Enwezor at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), Regarding Picasso: Contemporary Artists Responses to His Art at the Musée Picasso, Barcelona, the Moscow International Biennale for Young Arts: A Time for Dreams, Moscow, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale: Whorled Explo¬rations, Kochi, India and the 2014 TarraWarra Biennale: Whisper in My Mask, Tar¬raWarra.

Boyd has held solo exhibitions at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane (2016), Artspace in Sydney (2013) and at the Natural History Museum in London (2012). In 2014 Boyd received the Bulgari Art Award, as well as two major commissions for Macquarie Bank and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. Boyd’s work has been included in notable group exhibitions in Australia, such as Saltwater Country: toured in Washington D.C, The Netherlands, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia (2016),  Future Primitive, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne (2013), The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT 7), Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Brisbane (2012) and We Call Them Pirates Out Here, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2010). Boyd’s paintings are held in major public collections in Australia including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.

Public Lecture 7: Angela Tiatia

Our 7th invited speaker in the 2016 PSM Guest Lecture Series is Angela Tiatia.

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Tiatia is of Samoan and Australian heritage.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Auckland University in 2002 and a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Auckland University of Technology in 2010.  She has since been actively making and exhibiting work internationally.  Working in the mediums of paint, sculpture, video installation, and performance art, she is focused on subverting stereotypical notions of the feminine, exotic, and commodified being. Her works are held in the collections of The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), and private collectors throughout Australia.  Tiatia currently lives and works in Sydney, Australia with her husband and son.
Tiatia is represented by Alcaston Gallery in Melbourne, Australia.

Our sixth invited speaker in the 2016 PSM Guest Lecture Series is Donna West Brett.

Donna West Brett is a lecturer in Art History at the University of Sydney. She is author of Photography and Place: Seeing and Not Seeing Germany After 1945 (Routledge 2016) and ‘Interventions in Seeing: GDR Surveillance, Camouflage & the Cold War Camera’, in Camouflage Cultures: the Art of Disappearance, (University of Sydney Press, 2015). She is also a member of the editorial committee & reviews editor for the Australian & NZ Journal of Art and research member of the Photographic Cultures Research Group.

Public Lecture 5: Stephanie Simcox and Lyndal Irons

PSM is proud to announce the fifth event in the 2016 PSM Guest Lecture Series. This week we are joined by two speakers: Stephanie Simcox and Lyndal Irons

Stephanie Simcox is a Sydney based photographer who is committed to working with not-for-profit organisations in Australia and abroad on local development studies such as housing, equality and health. Recently returning from Bangladesh and Cambodia as chief photographer for Action Aids ‘safe cities for women campaign’ her photographs have received international attention, including nominations for the National Portrait Prize, the Maggie Diaz portrait prize, duo magazine portrait prize, Head On and the winner of the Canon Shine awards . She is named one of the ’30 under 30′ international female photographers 2016.

Lyndal Irons is a Sydney-based documentary photographer and writer focused on local reportage. Her work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at the State Library of New South Wales and the Australian Centre for Photography, as part of the Elizabeth Street Gallery (2014) and as a finalist in the Bowness Prize (2015), Olive Cotton Award (2015) and Sydney Life Photographic Competition (2011, 2012). She is the recipient of the 2015 Pool Grant.

Public Lecture 4: Abdul Abdullah

We are proud to announce our third speaker in the 2016 PSM Guest Lecture Series, Abdul Abullah

Abdul Abdullah was born in Bentley, Western Australia in 1986, and he graduated in 2008 from Curtin University. In 2009 Abdul received the Highly Commended in the NYSPP at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and was named a Perth Rising Star by Insite Magazine. In 2010 Abdul was included in the inaugural Triple J list of 25 Under 25 + Smashin’ It. In 2011 he was a recipient of Kickstart funding for the 2012 Next Wave Festival and won the Blake Prize for Human Justice. His works are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, The Art Gallery of Western Australia, The Gallery of Modern Art, Artbank, the University of Western Australia, Murdoch University, The Islamic Museum of Australia and The Bendigo Art Gallery. In 2015 Abdul exhibited at Primavera at the Museum of Contemporary Art, and at the Asia Pacific Triennial at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane.

Public Lecture 2: Cherine Fahd

Our second invited speaker in the 2016 PSM Guest Lecture Series is Cherine Fahd.

Cherine Fahd (1974) is a Sydney based artist and academic. Employing photography in playful explorations of the body and concealment, her photographic work draws on photography’s connections to performance, sculpture and painting. She completed a PhD at Monash University, Melbourne in 2015 and her doctoral research titled Hiding from the Camera for the Camera examined the paradox of both appearing for the camera whilst being hidden. Fahd’s extensive exhibition history has seen her work shown in major public institutions in Australia and internationally, most recently Photo LA, Los Angeles (2014), Crossing Paths with Vivian Maier, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2014), Australian Art, NGA Contemporary, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (2015). Her work is represented in significant public collections and she has been the recipient of numerous grants,  awards and residencies such as the NSW Women & Arts Fellowship from Arts NSW (2005), Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Foundation for the Arts Photography Award (2004), National Photography Prize (2010) and the Moya Dyring Studio from the Art Gallery of New South Wales (2003). She is currently Lecturer in Photomedia at The University of Sydney, Sydney College of the Arts.

Public Lecture 1: Isobel Parker Philip

PSM is proud to announce our first event for the 2016 PSM Guest Lecture Series. Our first invited speaker is Isobel Parker Philip.

Isobel Parker Philip is a curator and writer based in Sydney. She is the Assistant Curator of Photography at The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney and has independently curated exhibitions at UTS Gallery, Firstdraft, MOP Projects Sydney Guild, The Paper Mill, Breezeblock and the Villa Alba Museum, Melbourne. Her writing has appeared in un Magazine, Runway, Das Superpaper, Try Hard Magazine and RealTime, among other publications, and she has written catalogue essays for numerous artists including Robyn Stacey, Justine Varga, Nick Dorey and Heidi Yardley. Imprint – photography and the impressionable image, her current solo curatorial project at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, runs until 18 May 2016 in the Photography Gallery.

“In Absentia: The Politics of Cameraless Photography”

How can a photograph of nothing—of nothing discernable or apparently significant—be said to offer some useful political purchase on the world it inhabits? How can a photograph that represents, but does not depict, a given situation be freighted with historical knowledge and import? Confining itself to examples of cameraless photography, from the 1830s to now, this paper will ask these questions with a view to determining a politics for such photographs in the present. In fact, given our contemporary context, cameraless photographs assume that photography is always already a politics; to engage the visual and chemical grammar of the photograph is to dispute and challenge that fixity of that politics. To make such photographs returns photography to a unique, hand-made craft and away from global capitalism and its vast economies of mass exploitation. Not that these photographs are innocent; on the contrary they are often generated by actions that are toxic, radioactive, enigmatic, violent, dangerous. Nor are they “abstract.” Instead, I will argue, they redefine the nature of both photography’s realism and its potential as a political agent.   

Professor Geoffrey Batchen teaches art history at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, specializing in the history of photography. His books include “Burning with Desire: The Conception of Photography” (1997), “Each Wild Idea: Writing, Photography, History” (2001), “Forget Me Not: Photography and Remembrance” (2004), “William Henry Fox Talbot (2008), What of Shoes? Van Gogh and Art History” (2009), “Suspending Time: Life, Photography, Death” (2010) and “More Wild Ideas” (forthcoming in Chinese, 2015). He has also edited “Photography Degree Zero: Reflections on Roland Barthes’s Camera Lucida” (2009) and co-edited “Picturing Atrocity: Photography in Crisis” (2012). In April 2016, his exhibition, “Emanations: The Art of the Cameraless Photograph”, will open at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
