The New York Times covers a recent photo shoot by Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei. Though under close surveillance in Beijing, Mr. Ai closely monitored and art directed the shoot remotely via Skype and other standard technologies.

Brief observation at the New York Times about the ubiquity of cameras at this year’s Venice Biennale…

It’s that time of year! The time for summer, parties and end-of-year mayhem.
“Edition”, the inaugural end-of-year exhibition of student work from the Bachelor of Photography and Situated Media will take place on Wednesday, December 8th from 8-10pm. This is the same night as the massive School of Design Graduate Show which starts at 5:30 in the UTS Tower. Think of our show as the “after party”.
“Edition” will take place at 50 Kensington Street, just down the road from the infamous Clare Hotel. The School of Architecture at UTS has been kind enough to let us commandeer a portion of their beautiful warehouse for our show. Paris-based “photograffeur” JR won this year’s prestigious One Wish to Change the World prize from TED. Details on NPR’s “The Picture Show” blog.

JR creates pervasive art that spreads uninvited on buildings of Parisian slums, on walls in the Middle East, on broken bridges in Africa or in favelas in Brazil. People in the exhibit communities, those who often live with the bare minimum, discover something absolutely unnecessary but utterly wonderful. And they don’t just see it, they make it. Elderly women become models for a day; kids turn into artists for a week. In this art scene, there is no stage to separate the actors from the spectators.
Shawn Brackbill is a talented young photographer based in New York (and a good friend!). He’s recently updated his lovely blog with new images from the New York Fashion Week.

I’d like to congratulate the winners and finalists in this year’s UTS PSM High School Competition. Each year we host a competition looking for the best photographers and situated media students in Australia. This year we attracted almost 100 entries from across the country.
The winners and eight finalists were exhibited at UTS in the 6th floor gallery of the DAB Building. Dean Desley Luscombe presented the cash awards and certificates to the winners.
This year’s winner is Husniye Yilmazlar from Sule College:
