Public lecture 8: Daniel Palmer

Daniel Palmer is a writer and Senior Lecturer in the Art Theory Program in the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture at Monash University. He has a long-standing involvement with the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne, as a former curator and current board member. His publications include the books Twelve Australian Photo Artists (2009), co-authored with Blair French, and the edited volume Photogenic: Essays / Photography / CCP 2000–2004 (2005). His scholarly writings on photography have appeared in journals such as Photographies, Philosophy of Photography, Angelaki and Reading Room, and he regularly contributes to art magazines including Art & Australia and Frieze. His current research focuses upon the digital image and collaboration in photography. He is also working with Professor David Bate from the University of Westminster on a book around globalization and photography.

NYT: “This Camera Doesn’t Take Pictures. It Describes Them.”

On his blog, Mr. Richardson explains that the camera snaps a picture, then sends it to Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, a service in which humans are paid a small sum to do jobs that computers cannot solve, like describing the contents of a picture.

Public lecture/event 7: The Mirror Parlour

“Kaldor Public Art Projects launches Parlour, a creative new space where art, music, film, performance and hands-on workshops come together to explore and engage with our projects at night.”

The Mirror Parlour will include:

A special evening viewing of Thomas Demand’s new artwork “The Dailies”; “The Real, Presence and Absence” a panel discussion hosted by Andrew Benjamin and featuring Robert Sinnerbrink, Julian Murphet, Jill Bennett, Sam Spurr and David Burns; architectural interventions by AR-MA, Sarah Jamieson and N that will amplify the uncanny subterranean spaces of the CTA; ”Miniature Modernism Model-making Workshop 2” design your own Sydney cityscape using Harry Seidler’s geometric designs with architect Thomas Cole in the Model Shop; engage with UTS students in the “Performing Banality” studio;
