Public Lecture 8: Richard Bell

Richard Bell was born in 1953 in Charleville, Queensland, and is a member of the Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman and Gurang Gurang communities. Based in Brisbane, Richard has held numerous solo exhibitions since 1990. Bell’s work explores the complex artistic and political problems of Western, colonial and Indigenous art production. Growing out of a generation of Aboriginal activists and has remained committed to the politics of Aboriginal emancipation and self-determination. His paintings play with the practice of appropriation, often miming the pop art styles of Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns or the paint drips of Jackson Pollock, while using texts that complicate the way we think about racism and race politics in Australia. In recent times his work has taken on a new international focus, critiquing Western art and civilization and the way it deals with marginal cultures. Richard Bell is represented by Milani Gallery, Brisbane.

Public Lecture 7: “Jack Off” Film Screening and Discussion

“Jack Off” is a portrait of urban dweller Jack, and follows his daily life in a loose structure that spans what could be a week, a month, a year. Directed by Max Doyle, Jack Off stars a cast of non-actors and Sydney musicians, with a wonderfully naturalistic performance by photographer and musician Jack Mannix. The film captures the monotony of life for struggling musicians; a series of continuous and unexciting events occur one after another, and a regular gig at a divey club is all that seems to anchor life for these despondent characters.
